Jeep 4xe: a look at the different models

July 8,2022

Jeep has seen the introduction of the 4xe name over the past year. What does it mean? It’s simple, it refers to the plug-in hybrid versions of the models we know well.

At first, there was only one model, but slowly the number of 4xe models in the portfolio has grown, so that now there are several to choose from. Which one is the most interesting? All of them, in fact, but it depends on your needs and expectations.

Let’s take a look at what the 4xe models have in store for us at Jeep.

Two choices, many options

First, you have to understand that there are currently two 4xe models available. One with the Grand Cherokee, the other with the Wrangler. That gives us two choices, but in reality, there are eight variants available.

With the Grand Cherokee, 4xe technology is available with the 4xe, Trailhawk, Overland, Summit and Summit Reserve trim levels. With the Wrangler, we’re talking about the Sahara, Sahara High Altitude, and Rubicon versions.

In the latter case, it’s major because it adds electric capability to the most capable Wranger in terms of off-road performance. In other words, there are no compromises at Jeep, because you get the best of both worlds.

The Secret

The 4xe recipe is pretty magical. With the Wrangler, for example, it comes in the form of a powertrain that integrates two electric motors and a 400-volt battery with a fuel-efficient 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. An eight-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission teams up with them. This configuration maximizes the efficiency of the hybrid drive components and combines them with the Wrangler’s world-renowned and proven powertrain.

The recipe is the same with the Grand Cherokee, which also offers 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque from the same engine. The Grand Cherokee 4xe, with an estimated range of 40 km in all-electric mode, has an estimated total range of over 708 km.

The range with the Wrangler is virtually the same, give or take a few miles. That’s enough to drive in all-electric mode most of the time on our daily commute, which allows us to substantially reduce our gas bill.

And the beauty of it is that more 4xe models are coming our way. Watch for them to arrive at Jeep, and in the meantime, come and test drive the ones that are available to you. The seduction is strong, be warned.
